Registration Is Filling Up Quickly for Final Science Saturday Workshop at Fullerton College

By on April 9, 2010

Fullerton College is hosting a series of free science workshop for high school and college students during the Spring 2010 Semester.

Fullerton, CA (Thursday, April 8, 2010) – High school and college students have a chance to learn about the role magnetism plays in developing renewable energy sources, such as wind and tidal power, through a Science Saturday workshop held by Fullerton College on May 1, 2010. The free event will take place from 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. and will discuss the role of magnets and turbines in creating sustainable energy resources. It is the final workshop of a new series of fun, hands-on workshops covering specific STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) topics taking place throughout the 2010 Spring Semester. RSVP is required to attend, and space is limited.

Professor Dr. Jan Chadwick of Fullerton College will be leading the workshop, in which students will learn about ferrofluids, which are small nanoparticles suspended in liquid solution and are strongly polarized in the presence of a magnetic field. This unique liquid is used in biomedical, industrial and computer technology applications.

“Students have an opportunity to explore the crossroads of engineering, material science, chemistry, and nanotechnology because of the unique properties of ferrofluids. It’s a great way for students to see how science is interconnected and how one material can be used for a broad scope of applications,” said Chadwick. “Any students who are interested in seeing the actual impact science has on the world around them should attend.”

All of the materials and faculty training for the workshop has been supplied by the California NanoSystems Initiative (CNSI) at UCLA. No specific science classes are required as a prerequisite for students to attend the workshop.

To RSVP to this event, please email ScienceSaturdays@fullcoll.edu or call Amy Ramos at Fullerton College Office of Special Programs at (714) 992-7067. You may also visit www.ProjectGPS2.com, for more information about this and future Science Saturday workshops available through Fullerton College.
