FULLERTON CHAMBER TO RECOGNIZE OUTSTANDING YOUNG CITIZENS
FULLERTON, CA. – The Fullerton Chamber of Commerce has named students Francisco Rios Casas, Laura Villagas, Christine Kolbusz, and Ana Coria as its 2010 Young Citizens of the Year. The honorees will be recognized at the Chamber’s 31st Annual Salute to Education on Thursday, May 27, at the Holiday Inn & Suites, at 7:30 a.m. The 2010 Educator of the Year, Becky D’Arrigo, and Lifetime Achievement Award Honoree Brian Warner will also be recognized.
Francisco Casas, a student at Buena Park High School will receive a $1,000 scholarship. He is actively involved as the yearbook editor, vice president and secretary of the California Scholarship Federation, and member of the National Honor Society. He has maintained a 4.0 grade point average throughout this high school career and has volunteered numerous hours to tutoring young children at Orangethorpe Learning Center and his peers with algebra at his school. Casas has also volunteered time as a poll worker during the 2008 General Election and has received various awards and recognitions such as the Presidential Scholar Award from University of Southern California where he hopes to attend.
Rosary student and $1000 scholarship recipient Christine Kolbusz is known for her spirited personality, leadership qualities, humility and dedication at school. She is a member of the California Scholarship Federation and National Honor Society, in which she has dedicated service hours to her sister’s Girl Scout troop as well as volunteer time at St. Mary’s Medical Center in Long Beach. As part of her school’s Campus Ministry, she works with a team of other students to organize canned food and toy drives. Her leadership skills are emulated throughout the various activities Kolbusz takes part in. According to Kolbusz, “I am proud to be involved because I can directly organize the events and participate in them, while also encourage my friends and classmates to do the same.”
Laura Villagas, a senior at Buena Park High School, has chosen to attend University of California, Davis, where she plans to utilize the $500 Chamber member-funded scholarship. She has consistently challenged herself with rigorous advanced placement coursework while balancing her spare time with involvement in various organizations on campus. As president of the Future Farmers of America (FFA), she has played a prominent role in having Buena Park High School’s program recognizes as the premier FFA program in the western United States. In the community, Villegas is extremely active in her church’s youth groups. Villegas has also raised a steer, a calf and chickens, which exemplifies the passion she has of becoming a veterinarian.
Ana Coria is a senior at Fullerton Union High School who is not just involved, but shows dedication and excels in each of her many extracurricular activities. According to teacher and ASB advisor Sara Wilhelmi, “Ana has the initiative and determination to excel in school, to be a successful leader, and make an impact in the world.” Coria has volunteered countless hours at St. Jude Medical Center and Dental Clinic, as well as to Raymond Elementary School. She serves as a student leader for her school’s PUSH4PEACE organization and is the vice president for the AVID program. Coria is also an intern for the Human Relations Associate Program, which is part of Orange County Human Relations, where she facilitates workshops about ending high school and middle school violence. Through the Fullerton Chamber’s Education Committee, Chair Tina Javid, with The Gas Company, has specifically funded the $1,000 scholarship for Coria.
Fullerton is the “Education Community,” and the Fullerton Chamber of Commerce seeks to honor those individuals who will make a difference for the future. The esteemed award is selected through specific criteria, including community involvement, ethics, service, innovation, and leadership.
